THE WINNING SEASON tells the story of a legendary baseball player's struggle to choose between the love of his life and his love of the game. In the film, 12 year-old baseball fanatic Joe Soshack finds a mint condition Honus Wagner baseball card that magically takes him back to the 1909 World Series.

This teen drama follows high-school senior David Wakefield, a talented runner who is set on leading his track-and-field team to victory. As David continues to hone his running skills, he carries on a romance with his pretty sweetheart, Alice Baker, and struggles with other issues that come with the transition to adulthood. Also factoring into David's life is the Vietnam War, with the draft fully underway and young men being regularly called into service.

John Silver's ship has been repossessed; the Captain and the Kids have won $100,000 in a lottery. Silver dresses as an old lady and pretends to faint on the Captain's porch. He is taken inside and soon finds the winning ticket. Meanwhile, the kids spotted him outside and dress themselves as a young lady and come on to Silver, eventually handcuffing him to a batch of fireworks.

Three interwoven stories: that of a young man who longs to be a champion of the Santos Laguna soccer team; that of a leader of the fan club who is overcome by despair when he loses his life-long job; and that of one of the team managers who finds out he has a terminal illness. Through these specifics, the story of the successful career of the Santos Laguna as a symbol of a region of Guerrero with lots of heart unfolds.
